“On the Threshold of Summer”

UU Fellowship at Easton, May 31, 2020

Sunday, May 31, falls between the sabbats of Beltane, May 1, and Litha or Midsummer, June 21. Let’s spend some time preparing for our own personal celebration of the Longest Day. Even in the midst of sheltering at home, minimizing our face-to-face interactions, we can ready ourselves for summer, welcome the exuberant growth in the natural world, and ground and nurture ourselves. Join Lora Powell-Haney, MDiv, in an earth-centered service and ritual anticipating the Summer Solstice.

“Apologies”

Capital UU, Victoria, BC (Live on Zoom), September 19, 2021

The words “I’m sorry” can roll out so easily. But a true, sincere apology requires more than words. In this season of apology and atonement in the Jewish year (between Rosh Hoshana and last week’s Yom Kippur), we’ll explore what makes a good, sincere apology and the role of making things right (atonement), the final step. What does this look like on a larger community or national scale?

“Sacrifice Bunt and the Art of Giving Up”

UU Congregation of Erie, April 10, 2022

Major League Baseball’s delayed opening day finally happened on April 7, following a labor dispute between players and owners. In this month, focusing on “sacrifice“ it may seem too lighthearted to talk about a baseball practice called a ‘sacrifice bunt,’ but like so many baseball metaphors, it offers a way into deeper reflection. We’ll explore the art of giving up something to gain something else within the frame of a baseball diamond. The video below includes a short reflection for all ages, “Catfish” by Bob Dylan on harmonica and piano by Jackson Froman, and Lora’s sermon (begins at 5:42)
